Syndromic surveillance summary: 27 February 2025 week 8

Reporting week 17 February to 23 February
During week 8, most syndromic indicators for acute respiratory infections continued to decrease or remained stable, however there were small increases in influenza-like illness attendances at emergency departments. Gastroenteritis indicators continued to increase in the remote health advice (NHS 111) and emergency department syndromic systems, although gastroenteritis indicators were stable or decreased in GP syndromic surveillance systems.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 8, NHS 111 triaged calls and online assessments for diarrhoea and vomiting continued to increase nationally, with triaged calls increasing in adult age groups (15 years and over), while online assessments increased in those aged 5 to 64 years.
Triaged calls and online assessments for acute respiratory infections remained stable, however there were increases in adult age groups, particularly those aged 15 to 44 years. There was an increase in NHS 111 online assessments for eye problems during week 8 and a further increase in NHS 111 triaged calls for eye problems in children under 1 year of age.

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 8, GP in-hours consultation rates for upper respiratory tract infections decreased across all age groups. Influenza-like illness rates continued to decrease overall, but activity remained just above seasonally expected levels. Consultation rates for diarrhoea and vomiting also decreased.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 8, GP out-of-hours contacts for influenza-like illness stabilised, remaining above seasonally expected levels. Contacts for gastroenteritis, diarrhoea and vomiting all continued above baseline, however there were no further increases during week 8.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 8, acute respiratory infection attendances were stable overall and activity remained just above expected levels. Attendances for influenza-like illness increased slightly over the reporting week with small increases in attendances across most age groups, but particularly children aged under 5 years and adults aged 15 to 44 years. Gastroenteritis attendances continued to increase during week 8 and remained just above expected levels.

During week 8 ambulance calls for difficulty breathing increased slightly and were above seasonally expected levels.
