This report examines what lessons can be drawn from the work of national leaders of education (NLEs) on raising standards for all children. It looks at how the skills and experience of NLEs could be used to improve attainment gaps among pupils eligible for free school meals in particular.

The report looks at the:

  • strategies used by NLEs for improvement at three levels
  • common behaviours and skills used by NLEs when they have been successful in tackling gaps in attainment
  • recommendations on how the expertise of NLEs could be specifically used to close the gap in attainment
