Targeted support funding for national professional qualifications

Guidance about targeted support funding for schools and 16 to 19 organisations with 1 to 600 pupils for the 2022 to 2023 and 2023 to 2024 academic years.

Guidance on the targeted support payments for schools and 16 to 19 organisations with 1 to 600 pupils, state -funded primary schools with 1 to 150 pupils and state-funded primary schools with more than 150 pupils that employ teachers and leaders who take national professional qualifications (NPQs). These payments are for each respective academic year for 2022 to 2023 and 2023 to 2024. However, please note for state-funded primary schools with 1 to 150 pupils the payment is only applicable for the academic year 2023 to 2024.

Conditions of grant

This guidance sets out the terms and conditions applied to the NPQ targeted support fund grant allocations and payments to eligible organisations in each respective academic year for 2022 to 2023 and 2023 and 2024.

Eligibility for the grant is assessed at the point of registration and based on the information provided during this process, including pupil information. For state-funded primary schools with 1 to 150 pupils and state-funded primary schools with more than 150 pupils funding amounts may vary dependant on the point of registration. Allocations

You can view the academic year 2022 to 2023 and academic year 2023 to 2024 grant funding for the national professional qualification (NPQ) targeted support funding grant on the allocations spreadsheets. Please note the following on the 2024 allocations spreadsheet:

  • column G lists the NPQ targeted support funding standard amount (£200.00 paid per participant to all eligible schools)
  • column H lists NPQ targeted support funding primary plus amount (additional £600 paid per participant to state-funded primary schools with 1 to 150 pupils).

Payments

We will make payments in arrears during the summer term following when the NPQ participants begin their course. Eligibility is assessed at the point of registration and based on the information provided during this process.

Allocation payments for the academic year 2022 to 2023 were made to academies and maintained schools, via their local authority in June 2023. A further payment to independent special schools has been made from July 2023 onwards.

We made a sweep up payment in autumn 2023, to ensure all eligible schools and organisations not captured in the summer 2023 payment window were paid in year.

Allocation payments for the academic year 2023 to 2024 will be made to academies and maintained schools, via their local authority in June 2024, and a further payment to independent special schools will be made from July 2024 onwards.

We will make a sweep up payment in autumn 2024, to ensure all eligible schools and organisations not captured in the summer 2024 payment window will be paid in year.
