Participation in National Professional Qualifications (NPQs)
This transparency release reports on both the first and second cohort of teachers and leaders who participated in the reformed suite of NPQs, starting an NPQ in autumn 2021 and spring 2022 respectively.
The table provides the:
- number of NPQ courses that have been started since autumn 2021
- region in which the participant’s school is located
Number of confirmed NPQ starts by region
Region | Confirmed starts (DfE-Funded) |
---|---|
East Midlands | 2,528 |
East of England | 2,693 |
London | 5,065 |
North-east | 1,561 |
North-west | 4,267 |
South-east | 4,162 |
South-west | 2,582 |
West Midlands | 3,439 |
Yorkshire and the Humber | 2,853 |
Not available | 3 |
Total | 29,153 |
To date, 29,153 reformed NPQ courses have been declared as started since the launch of the NPQ reforms in autumn 2021. This figure does not represent the number of unique participants taking a reformed NPQ course, however, as participants are able to take multiple NPQ courses.
The number of reformed DfE-funded NPQ courses started only includes those for which details were submitted to DfE by lead providers before 20 April 2022. It is expected that the number of confirmed NPQ starts will increase later in the academic year.
Data limitations
The figures relate to the number of DfE-funded confirmed NPQ course starts only and are based on management information submitted to the DfE by lead providers.
The data is accurate as of 20 April 2022 and are subject to change.
The data does not capture all NPQs that are being undertaken, but only those funded by DfE and for which details were submitted through the digital service.
Lead providers said they are yet to submit details for between 100 to 200 NPQ starts declarations, which have not been included in this transparency release. Lead providers are required to submit details of all participants who have started their NPQ course to receive funding from DfE.
