Applies to England
Documents
Details
This guidance is for:
- local authorities
- school leaders
- school teachers
- governing bodies and their representatives
It relates to local authority maintained schools, academies (including free schools), hospital schools, non-maintained special schools, independent special schools, and centrally employed teachers in England.
You can find guidance on the teachers pension scheme employer contribution grant for further education providers that participate in the scheme and 16 to 19 maintained schools and academies for 2024 to 2025.
For early years, we have already included additional funding in published core rates for 2024 to 2025.
Methodology
This document sets out the methodology for teachers’ pension employer contribution grant (TPECG) 2024. This includes guidance on how we will allocate funding in the 2024 to 2025 financial year for mainstream schools (for the 5 to 16-year-old age range), special schools (including maintained special schools, special academies and free schools, hospital schools, non-maintained special schools (NMSS) and independent special schools) and alternative provision, and local authorities with centrally employed teachers.
Conditions of grant
This document sets out the terms and conditions that local authorities, academies and NMSS must follow.
Allocations
To help schools with their planning, we created a calculator for mainstream schools and academies to estimate what their TPECG 2024 allocation for 2024 to 2025 would be. We have since published school level allocations showing the total funding allocated for 2024 to 2025 for mainstream and special schools, and for centrally employed teachers.
Payments
Payments will be made in 2 tranches. The first payment for the period April to August 2024 will be made to:
- local authorities for maintained schools (5 to 16) on 31 May
- academies (5 to 16) on 10 June
- non-maintained special schools (NMSS) on 18 June
- historical (shown as high needs) NMSS on 18 July
Further information on payments can be found in the methodology document.

We have added the October 2024 allocations spreadsheet for mainstream schools; this excludes new and growing schools who will receive their second payment in early 2025.
-
We have added the allocations for local authorities with centrally employed teachers.
-
We have added detail to section 3 of the conditions of grant for local authorities to clarify how a local authority should take account of the additional cost of the employer contribution rate in respect of teachers in the teachers’ pension scheme where that cost is included in any increase in fees charged by independent schools for pupils with SEND and education, health and care (EHC) plans. We have also amended section 4.2 of the methodology document to explain the data sources for the allocation calculations, and accordingly revised the allocation table to clarify the calculation of the grant.
-
We have published the conditions of grant together with spreadsheets setting out the 2024 to 2025 financial year allocations for mainstream and special schools.
