This guidance:

  • sets out a model of how the statutory curriculum can be delivered
  • identifies the core concepts that are needed for pupils to progress in their study of music
  • demonstrates how pupils can build their understanding of these concepts from year 1 to year 9

You can use this guidance to help plan teaching the statutory music curriculum at key stages 1 to 3.

It is intended to support teaching and can be used alongside other high-quality plans and resources, including textbooks.

Read the national plan for music education to see how our vision for music education can be achieved through partnerships with schools, music hubs, the music and creative sector, and others.

Further support for music teachers is available through our music education hub programme.
