Thames Water Utilities Limited: application made to abstract water

Published 2 January 2025

Applies to England

Details of the application

Thames Water Utilities Limited has applied to the Environment Agency to vary a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is to vary licence serial number 28/39/27/0097, which authorises water abstraction for public water supply from underground strata comprising Gravels through ten boreholes. These boreholes are identified as Points A through H and Points J through K.

The proposed variation involves adding a new abstraction borehole at National Grid Reference (NGR) SU 91 79 to the existing licence and removing one of the existing abstraction boreholes at NGR SU 91 78 (Point K). The applicant has never used the borehole at Point K for abstraction purposes because of poor water quality and significant interference from one of the existing abstraction boreholes (Point C). The applicant has decommissioned the unused borehole.

The existing licence authorises the following combined quantities from the existing abstraction boreholes:

  • 493 litres per second

  • 1,364 cubic metres an hour

  • 27,276 cubic metres a day

  • 6,655,344 cubic metres a year

  • between 1 April and 31 March inclusive in each year.

There will be no changes to the authorised abstraction quantities as part of this licence variation
