From April 2017, through to the end of the 2018 financial year, IPO engaged with 13,594 businesses regarding Intellectual Property (IP), through a range of seminars, workshops or business exhibitions.

IPO also delivered intensive 3-day IP training to 149 businesses or business advisors during this period and facilitated IP audits for 400 businesses. In addition to this, our network of Patent Libraries have provided advice to 39,445 individuals and 71,047 people have used our suite of online tools and resources for businesses to help them better use their IP.

Through IPO’s ongoing engagement with business advisors, and their ability to share their IP knowledge with their clients, plus the channels outlined above, we calculate that we have been able to engage with over 130,511 businesses and provide them with IP advice, since April 2017.

Overall, 86% of businesses that IPO has engaged with have reported making an informed decision about their IP following our engagement.

1. IPO updated the following guidance: Manual of Patent Practice to provide guidance on new IP Act 2017. The legislation behind this guidance has been impacted. Educational material relating to a patents supreme court case. Collective Rights Management including audit and transparency.

2. IPO dealt with the following number of applications between 1 June 2017 and 31 April 2018: Patents: 20427, TM: 72915, Designs: 21005.

3. IPO published 7 consultations between 8 June 2017 and 8 May 2018.

IPO sought views on proposed changes to UK law resulting from the Trade Marks Directive 2015. IPO issued a call for views on maximising the incentives of the Intellectual Property system to stimulate collaborative innovation and licensing opportunities.

IPO is confident that all activity listed falls within the de-minimis threshold.
