The Canal and River Trust on behalf of SSE PLC has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence in accordance with Section 66 of the Water Resources Act 1991.
The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.
The application is to vary licence serial number MD/028/0083/014 which authorises the abstraction of water from the Stainforth and Keadby Canal near Keadby at National Grid Reference (NGR) SE 82790 11478. Abstraction is for the purpose of evaporative cooling at Keadby Power Station at a rate of 348 litres per second, 1,253 cubic metres per hour, 19,600 cubic metres per day and 4,950,000 cubic metres per year.
The variation applied for is to add an additional abstraction location between NGR SE 82655 11480 and SE 82781 11470 on the Stainforth and Keadby Canal upstream of Keadby Lock and near to the existing abstraction point. The proposal includes an increase to the daily abstraction rate to 27,440 cubic metres and the annual volume to 7,250,000 cubic metres. The additional water is required for providing evaporative cooling at a new Low Carbon Gas Fired Generating Station known as Keadby Phase 3 on land at Keadby Power Station.
