The economic and social cost of contact child sexual abuse

Details

Estimating the economic and social cost of contact child sexual abuse (CSA) is important to our understanding of this crime. This report follows the costing framework in Heeks et al. (2018). It estimates the financial and non-financial (monetised) cost relating to all victims who began to experience, or continued to experience, contact CSA in England and Wales in the year ending 31st March 2019. This is estimated to be at least £10.1 billion.

This estimate is the most comprehensive and up to date at the time of publication. It reinforces the need to tackle contact CSA and informs the policy and operational response by improving our understanding of the scale and nature of the harm and thereby value from interventions.
