The Environment Agency: application made to abstract water

Details of the application

The Environment Agency has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Paragraph 2 of Schedule 2 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a variation to a full abstraction licence at the River Gwash at Ryhall at National Grid Reference TF 04042 10729 for transfer for the purpose of maintaining water levels.

Further details of the proposal are: a reduction in the hands off flow measured at Belmesthorpe Gauging Station from 27,000 cubic metres a day to 21,600 cubic metres a day. A reduction in volumes authorised to be abstracted and transferred from 4,000,000 cubic metres a year to 2,000,000 cubic metres a year and 60,000 cubic metres a day to 20,000 cubic metres a day.

The licensable quantities will be:

  • 834 cubic metres an hour

  • 20,000 cubic metres a day

  • 2,000,000 cubic metres a year

  • at an instantaneous rate of 232 litres per second.

After the 21 February 2025, the Environment Agency will be able to grant a licence authorising the proposal. The licence shall be viewed as granted, unless the Secretary of State, either as a result of any representations made about the proposal or otherwise, instructs or asks for an application to be made to them.
