The Mission Progress Report 2023 to 2024 outlines the progress of the NDA’s mission to decommission the UK’s early nuclear sites safely, securely, and cost-effectively. The report aligns with the our strategy and focuses on our four driving themes: Spent Fuels, Nuclear Materials, Integrated Waste Management, and Site Decommissioning and Remediation.

Key highlights include:

  • Spent Fuels: All Magnox reactors are defueled, and reprocessing has ended. Remaining spent fuel is in interim storage.
  • Nuclear Materials: Plutonium is consolidated at Sellafield, and uranium consolidation is ongoing.
  • Integrated Waste Management: Significant progress in waste retrieval and treatment, with a focus on legacy facilities.
  • Site Decommissioning and Remediation: Ongoing decommissioning and land remediation to release sites for future use.

The report emphasises the importance of continuous monitoring, adapting to new technologies, and ensuring the safe management of radioactive waste. The NDA’s mission is crucial for supporting the UK’s energy security and achieving carbon net zero goals.
