The Oil and Pipelines Agency has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.
The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.
The application is for a full licence to abstract water from Underground strata comprising of slate and siltstone (Saltash Formation) at Thanckes Fuel Depot, Torpoint, Cornwall centred around National Grid Reference (NGR): SX 43204 56120 to transfer it to the Hamoaze (River Tamar) at NGR: SX 43989 55951 without intervening use.
The application is to abstract water as follows:
- 96 cubic metres an hour
- 2,304 cubic metres a day
- 840,960 cubic metres a year
- between 1 April and 31 March inclusive in each year.
- At a maximum instantaneous rate of 26.7 litres per second, all year.
Abstraction will be from 24 boreholes sited alongside underground fuel tanks for the purpose of dewatering to relieve hydraulic pressure and the risk of failure of the fuel tanks. Prior to discharge to the River Tamar, the abstracted water will pass through an oil separator.
