The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.
The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.
The application is to renew licence serial number 01/150/R01 which authorises the abstraction of 49,609 cubic metres between 01 April and 31 May inclusive and 195,190 cubic metres between 01 November and 31 March inclusive from inland waters known as the Denton New Cut and internal ditches and drains near Gravesend, Kent, within the boundaries formed by the following National Grid References (NGRs):
At Shorne Marshes – NGRs TQ 68022 74370, TQ 69910 74731, TQ 70089 74057 and TQ 68113 73966
At Higham Marshes – NGRs TQ 69842 74962, TQ 70952 75929, TQ 71932 74501 and TQ 70515 74149
The application also seeks to increase the maximum licenced abstraction to 67,209 cubic metres between 01 April and 31 May inclusive and to 231,030 cubic metres between 01 November and 31 March inclusive.
The water is abstracted for the purpose of maintaining and conserving wetland. There is no proposed increase in hourly, daily, or instantaneous abstraction rates.
