The RPC has agreed to extend its independent scrutiny to the Government’s assessments of the impacts of international free trade agreements. As with our opinions on regulatory proposals, we offer commentary on the quality and robustness of the evidence and impact analysis; and opine on whether the final stage impact assessments are fit for purpose to inform parliamentary review.

We have now published our first such opinion, relating to the UK-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. The RPC considers the final impact assessment to be fit for purpose.

We see our independent scrutiny role as an important part of the Government review process and look forward to assessing future Government free trade agreements.

The corresponding Impact Assessment can be found: here.
