The University of Reading has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.
The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.
The application is for a full licence to abstract water from underground strata comprising Chalk at the University of Reading, Whiteknights at National Grid References SU 73522 71426 and SU 73606 71526.
The application is to abstract water as follows:
- 108 cubic metres an hour
- 2,592 cubic metres a day
- 720,000 cubic metres a year
- All year.
The applicant plans to install an open-loop ground-source heat pump system to heat and cool several buildings on the university campus.
The abstracted water will be pumped through a heat exchanger and then returned to the same groundwater source via two injection boreholes at National Grid References SU 73653 71339 and SU 73714 71459 within 24 hours of abstraction.
