Request:
Please could you advise how many trade mark applications were received on 1 January 1876 and if possible, the details of these applications.
Please also could you let me know how many of these applications matured to registration.
Information released:
There were 79 applications received on 1 January 1876, according to the first Minute Book used to record applications and their progress.
You can check on which marks remain in force and their current ownership by searching for each number on our website. What the Minute Book does not record is the images of the device marks, e.g. the Bass triangle in its original form. That should be available on our database, but none of the 79 marks that have expired (unless very recently) will not be held there.
The only other source I know of expired device mark images would be the early TM Journals, but searching those would be a difficult task because publication is not chronologically linked to the application dates. I think you could narrow the Journal editions down though from the publication information in the Minute Book.
Otherwise, you could try The National Archives. I know they have a collection of cotton mark applications, but they may also have copies of early more general marks filed from before the Manchester office opened. If they do, some may well be in colour and clearer than the Journal images.
