Published 27 July 2021
The UK and Japanese governments held the fourth meeting of the Industrial Policy Dialogue virtually this month (12 July 2021). Discussions focused on collaboration between our 2 countries, in particular:
- the shared challenges of recovering from the pandemic
- fostering clean growth
- supporting our trade and business relationship
The dialogue was co-chaired by Sarah Munby, Permanent Secretary for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and Naoshi Hirose, Vice Minister for International Affairs of Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The aim of the dialogue was to deepen our co-operation on industrial policy and set the direction for future collaboration as we work in partnership to build back better.
Following updates on both countries’ economic situations and areas of joint interest in international forums, the co-Chairs reviewed the progress of our joint industrial policy working groups and agreed to prioritise future collaboration in aviation, space, advanced manufacturing and energy. The Permanent Secretary and Vice Minister also signed a Memorandum of Cooperation which agrees key government institutions will work together to support the expansion of UK small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Japanese market, as well as supporting Japanese SMEs in the UK.
The UK-Japan Industrial Policy Dialogue meets annually, with the next meeting due to take place in 2022.
