Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and Foreign Minister of Chile Alberto van Klaveren set the direction for the relationship between 2 likeminded, liberal democracies committed to working together to solve global challenges.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and the Foreign Minister of Chile Alberto van Klaveren met on 22 May in Santiago for the UK-Chile High-Level Political Dialogue to deepen the UK and Chile’s diplomatic, economic, financial, trade, business and defence links.

This joint statement was issued following the meeting: It:

  • highlights the 200th anniversary of the appointment of Great Britain’s first Consul General to Chile in 1823, the importance of the UK and Chile’s extensive people-to-people links forged over the last 2 centuries, and the UK and Chile’s shared commitment to ensure they continue to thrive
  • recognises the strength and potential for the future of the UK-Chile trade relationship and the new opportunities offered through the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)
  • emphasises the UK and Chile’s shared democratic values and respect for fundamental freedoms, human rights, and the rule of law and the UK and Chile’s determination to work together to address global challenges
  • outlines the UK and Chile’s plans for further joint efforts to tackle climate change
