Details
An overview of the work that UKHSA conducts with animals - including our commitment to being more transparent and only using animals when there is no other viable option.
It is accompanied by the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body (AWERB) terms of reference which set out a summary of the process used by each of the 3 Home Office registered establishments to assess project proposals, and to maintain the highest possible standards of practice in their research and facilities.
Note that the first 9 months of the activity described in the 2021 report were carried out by Public Health England (PHE) before its laboratories were taken over, on 1 October 2021, by UKHSA.
Previous reports on PHE’s research involving animals remain available on GOV.UK.
