3rd meeting of the Specialised Committee on Trade in Goods under the Agreement between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Japan for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership

  1. The third meeting of the Specialised Committee on Trade in Goods under the Agreement between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Japan for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership (UK-Japan CEPA) took place on the 5 December 2024 via videoconference.

  2. On the Japanese side, the participants included representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA) and the Embassy of Japan in the UK, the Ministry of Finance (MOF), the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). On the UK side, the participants included representatives from the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and the British Embassy in Japan.

  3. The Committee exchanged information and views on the development of bilateral trade in goods over the third year of implementation of the UK-Japan CEPA in accordance with the adopted agenda as attached herewith. Both sides noted that the bilateral trade amount had recovered in 2023 with exceeding the level before the COVID-19 pandemic. Both sides also exchanged information on detailed category-wise trade trends.

  4. Both sides welcomed that the preference utilisation rate (PUR) of CEPA has been steadily increasing and introduced each other their respective efforts to improve the PUR. Both sides confirmed to continue their efforts toward improving the PUR.
