This document was created by the Vulnerable Users Working Group (VUWG), part of the UK Council for Internet Safety (UKCIS).

Research has shown that vulnerable children, including children in care, experience significant benefits from being online but are also more at risk of harm than their peers, and therefore require tailored support.

Produced with input from frontline practitioners, this concise resource contains nine guiding principles to help social workers and the wider children’s social care workforce to support the online lives of children in care.

The principles cover professional practice, supporting foster carers and supporting young people. Each principle is accompanied by explanatory rationale, as well as examples of best practice and risks to look out for.
