The word university is a sensitive word as specified in the Company, Limited Liability Partnership and Business Names (Sensitive Words and Expressions) Regulations 2014.

This note sets out the procedures in England for making applications for use of the sensitive words university, higher education and polytechnic, in a business or company name. It applies to everyone wanting to use these words, even if they are involved in delivering higher education.
