Introduction
The following is a listing of the numbers allocated to Local Weights and Measures Authorities for identification purposes on items of weighing or measuring equipment. This list covers those numbers used to indicate successful initial verification in accordance with Council Directives of the European Community.
It should be noted that reciprocal arrangements exist with countries ‘designated’ under the Weights and Measures Act, namely Northern Ireland, Jersey and the Isle of Man. This means that equipment may be lawfully used in Great Britain if it bears a valid stamp of one of those countries. Similarly equipment which has undergone initial verification in another Member State of the EC may be exported to the UK for use here.
Notes:
- The number is in the two parts of the letter ‘e’. In the upper closed part is the distinguishing capital letter(s) of the State concerned, ie UK, together with one or two figures identifying a territorial or administrative subdivision. In the lower open part is the identification number of the verifying office.
- The use of the letter ‘e’ is not confined to measuring instrument Directives, but it may also be found on other products, eg pressure vessels, with other authorities responsible for its application.
- The list excludes numbers allocated to the Department of Energy for use in connection with the verification of gas meters and electricity meters.
- On certain measuring instruments with lack of space, such as alcohol hydrometers, a special version of the mark of EEC initial verification is used.
- Where a number is cancelled, it has been omitted from the list.
