York Potash Ltd: application made to abstract water

York Potash Ltd has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.
The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.
The application is to vary licence serial number NE/027/0029/007 to abstract water from the Lias Group of aquifers close to Sneatonthorpe near Whitby, North Yorkshire at National Grid References (NGRs) NZ 89320 05337, NZ 89297 05436, NZ 89401 05466 and also from the area marked by NGRs NZ 89256 05534, NZ 89469 05458, NZ 89365 05354 and NZ 89255 05400.
The variation applied for is to reduce the groundwater level to beneath the Lias Group of aquifers, and into the Penarth Group and Mercia Mudstone Group of aquifers. The variation also seeks to increase the quantity authorised for abstraction to:
- 96 cubic metres an hour
- 2,240 cubic metres a day
- 183,260 cubic metres a year
- At an instantaneous rate not exceeding 43 litres per second.
Abstraction will take place all year and will be required during the construction and operation phases of the Woodsmith Mine shafts.
