UK surveillance for congenital Zika syndrome
Updated 2 August 2017
In response to the ongoing international Zika outbreak, the UK has been undertaking surveillance of pregnant women with relevant travel history, and for babies with possible congenital Zika syndrome.
1. UK Obstetric Surveillance system
The UK Obstetric Surveillance system (UKOSS) carried out surveillance of pregnancy outcomes in mothers who had travelled to a country or area with high or moderate risk of Zika virus transmission. Results from this surveillance will be published on the UKOSS website in due course.
2. British Paediatric Surveillance Unit
The British Paediatric Surveillance Unit (BPSU) aims to record all babies with microcephaly or neurological abnormalities born in the UK and Republic of Ireland to mothers who have travelled to countries or areas with high or moderate risk of Zika virus transmission.
3. National Congenital Anomaly Service
The National Congenital Anomaly and Rare Disease Registration Service (NCARDRS) in Public Health England has a separate Zika associated congenital anomaly syndrome pathway for notifications.
