Statement by Alice Jacobs, UK Deputy Political Coordinator at the UN, at the Security Council emergency meeting on Iraq

This was published under the 2019 to 2022 Johnson Conservative government

The UK condemns the attack that took place in Duhok governorate on 20th July and would like to express its deepest sympathy to the victims and those affected.

The UK deplores the loss of civilian life, and we are concerned about the impact this attack may have on the stability of Iraq. We fully support the Iraqi authorities’ investigation into the attack.

It is vital that all actors continue to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq. Dialogue and cooperation remain essential to combat terrorism, ensure regional security and protect civilians.

We reiterate the need for all actors to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law in order to maintain stability in Iraq and the region.

Finally, I’d like to take the opportunity to once again reaffirm the UK’s steadfast commitment to the security of Iraq and the wider region.
