UN Human Rights Council 49: UK statement during the Interactive Dialogue on the High Commissioner’s report on Nicaragua
The UK's Global Ambassador for Human Rights, Rita French delivered this statement and outlined concerns at reports of continuing human rights violations, and the extension and implementation of regulations to maintain control.
Thank you, Mr President.
The United Kingdom thanks the High Commissioner for her statement and recent report on the situation in Nicaragua.
We also note the High Commissioner’s December 2021 update, calling on Nicaragua to create the conditions necessary for, and conducive to, a national dialogue, based on a road map with clear commitments.
The UK is deeply concerned by the deteriorating human rights situation in Nicaragua, and by the lack of progress in the political dialogue. We are particularly concerned at reports of continuing human rights violations, and the extension and implementation of regulations to maintain control.
We call for the release of political prisoners, and condemn the Nicaraguan government’s attempts to suppress political opposition and silence critics. The UK urges the Nicaraguan government to end the repression of its citizens and cooperate fully with international human rights bodies. We urge the government to respect democratic principles, comply with international human rights law, and establish a meaningful, inclusive and transparent national dialogue.
