UN Human Rights Council 49: UK statement for the interactive dialogue with the International Independent Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela
Simon Manley, UK Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, delivered the UK statement, encouraging Venezuela to give effect to the previous recommendations made by the Fact-Finding Mission.
Thank you, Mr President.
Señora Valiñas, let me thank you for your update on the work of the International Independent Fact-Finding Mission. We encourage Venezuela to give effect to the previous recommendations made by the Mission.
Admiramos la valentía de quienes continúan contribuyendo con la investigación de la Misión. El régimen de sigue negando al pueblo venezolano sus derechos fundamentales.
We are deeply concerned by the continued persecution of individuals and organisations conducting human rights work. This must stop. We call for the release of the Director of the NGO FundaRedes who has been arbitrarily detained since July 2021, as mentioned by Sra Valiñas.
We welcome the Mission’s efforts to gather evidence of serious human rights violations. We support the work of the Mission and urges members of this Council to support the renewal of its mandate in September.
Has the Mission undertaken an investigation into alleged human rights abuses taking place in the Arco Minero Orinoco, and how does it evaluate what is happening there?
Thank you.
