Documents
Details
This report sets out and comments on abortion statistics in England and Wales for 2022 and provides an update to the ad hoc publication Abortion statistics for England and Wales: January to June 2022.
The statistics are obtained from the abortion notification forms returned to the chief medical officers of England and Wales.
Correction notice
Since these statistics were published in May 2024, an issue has been identified with the data for ‘Bristol, City of’ and ‘North Somerset’ in tables 10c, 10d, 11c and 11d in the spreadsheet ‘Abortion statistics 2022: data tables’. This affected the number of abortions and rates presented for these local authorities. Another issue has been identified with the rate of abortions by index of multiple deprivation (IMD) in England and Wales in tables 14a, 14b and 14c.
A correction notice has been added to the data tables spreadsheet and the data in these tables has been amended. Table 14c has been removed. Figures will be updated once a robust solution has been found for aligning IMD 2019 scores with 2021 lower layer super output areas (LSOAs) for Wales. The commentary on the index of multiple deprivation in the document ‘Abortion statistics, England and Wales: 2022’ has also been amended.
