The latest provisional monthly energy production, trade, consumption and prices statistics produced by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

Documents

Details

Energy production, trade and consumption statistics are provided in total and by fuel and provide an analysis of the latest 3 months data compared to the same period a year earlier. Energy price statistics cover domestic price indices, prices of road fuels and petroleum products and comparisons of international road fuel prices.

Energy production, trade and consumption

Highlights for the 3 month period January to March 2023, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

  • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis fell by 5.0%, with higher energy prices a key factor in reduced consumption levels. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 5.3%. (table ET 1.2)
  • Indigenous energy production fell by 6.0%, due to falls in oil production and record low nuclear output due to outages. (table ET 1.1)
  • Russian imports of oil and gas have ceased. The UK has not imported any Russian gas since March 2022, and there have been no Russian oil imports since November 2022. (table ET 4.4) and (table ET 3.14)
  • Gas exports up 40%; the UK has been playing a key role in supplying gas to Europe as it looks to move away from Russian gas. (table ET 4.3)
  • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 7.6%, with coal down 54%, gas down 5.6%, nuclear down 22% with output in the first 3 months of 2023 at a record low 3 monthly level, and renewables broadly unchanged.* (table ET 5.4)
  • Renewables provided a record high 46.2% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with total wind and offshore wind at record high shares of 36.5% and 24.1% respectively, with gas at 37.0%, nuclear at 14.3% and coal at 1.6%.* (table ET 5.4)
  • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 1.0 percentage points at 60.5%, whilst fossil fuel share down 1.0 percentage points at 38.9%.* (table ET 5.4)

*Major Power Producers (MPPs) data published monthly, all generating companies data published quarterly.

Energy prices

Highlights for May 2023 compared to April 2023:

Petrol down 1.6 pence per litre and diesel down 6.8 pence per litre. (table QEP 4.1.1)
