Latest updates

May 2022 update of the severe mental illness profile includes:

  • update of the condition-specific premature mortality and excess premature mortality for people with SMI indicators for the periods 2017 to 2019 and 2018 to 2020 for England, regions and upper tier local authorities

  • publication of additional breakdowns for the premature mortality and excess premature mortality for people with SMI indicators for the periods 2015 to 2017, 2016 to 2018, 2017 to 2019 and 2018 to 2020 for England

This update also includes correction of all causes excess premature mortality for people with SMI indicators for the periods 2017 to 2019 and 2018 to 2020 for England, regions and upper tier local authorities. This is due to an error in previous data which has been re-published by NHS Digital.

The severe mental illness profile has been produced to support an intelligence-driven approach to understanding and meeting need. It provides data to help improve support, services and outcomes for people living with and recovering from severe mental illness. The profile also provides planners, providers and stakeholders with the means to profile their area and benchmark against similar populations.
