Details

The main findings in the provisional number of appeals for GCSE and GCE (AS and A level) made following summer 2020 in England were:

  1. Overall, 31,435 (0.5%) of the 6.0 million grades certified for GCSEs, AS and A levels were challenged.
  2. Of the 31,435 grades challenged, 4,650 (15%) were changed.
  3. The number of appeals received in summer 2020 was 3,570.
  4. The number of appeals upheld in summer 2020 was 2,875.
  5. The most common reason for appeals was centre error.
  6. Most upheld appeals resulted in a grade change.
  7. A small proportion (3%) of initial reviews progressed to an independent review.
