Armed Forces Continuous Attitude Survey: 2024 summary

This statistical release provides results from the Armed Forces Continuous Attitude Survey (AFCAS) 2024, along with results from previous years. Statistics from AFCAS are used by both internal Ministry of Defence (MOD) teams and external bodies to inform the development of policy and measure the impact of decisions affecting personnel, including major programmes such as the Armed Forces Covenant. 

32% Percentage of personnel satisfied with the rate of basic pay in 2024.                           
            This is unchanged since last year, but down 13 percentage points since 2021. Satisfaction remains well below the peak level reported in 2010 (52%).                                                               
    58% Percentage of personnel that rate their Service morale as ‘low’ in 2024.                                     
            This has increased for the third year in a row, up 16 percentage points since 2021.                                                                  
    28% Percentage of personnel living in Service Family Accommodation satisfied with the responses to requests for maintenance/repair work in 2024.                                       
            An increase of 10 percentage points since 2023 but remains well below peak reported in 2014 (46%).                                                                        
    40% Percentage personnel satisfied with their Service life in general this year.            
            This is unchanged since last year, remaining at its lowest reported level.                                                               
    60% Percentage of personnel planning to stay in the Services this year.         
            This is unchanged since 2022, five percentage points lower than the peak reported in 2021.                                                                
    38% Percentage of personnel satisfied with pension benefits in 2024.                                     
            This has fallen two years in a row, down five percentage points since 2022.                                                             
    12% Percentage of personnel indicating they have been subject to bullying, harassment and discrimination in a Service environment in the last twelve months.                                      
            This is unchanged since this question was first asked in 2015.
