Details

Energy production and consumption statistics are provided in total and by fuel and provide an analysis of the latest 3 months data compared to the same period a year earlier. Energy price statistics cover domestic price indices, prices of road fuels and petroleum products and comparisons of international road fuel prices.

Energy production and consumption

Highlights for the 3 month period April 2020 to June 2020, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

  • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis fell by 22% with a noticeable reduction in petroleum consumption as demand for transport fuels fell due to the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown from 23 March 2020; low sales of transport fuels contributed to an overall record low of monthly energy consumption in May 2020. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 17%. (table ET 1.2) and (table ET 3.13)
  • Indigenous energy production up by 3.1%, with rises in gas, bioenergy, wind, solar and hydro output but falls in output from coal, oil and nuclear. (table ET 1.1)
  • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 14%, with coal down 20% due to no coal burnt in Great Britain from 10 April until 16 June 2020 and gas down 33%, whilst renewables up by 15%. * (table ET 5.4)
  • Gas provided 38.6% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with renewables at 38.5%, nuclear at 21.4% and coal at 0.7%. * (table ET 5.4)
  • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 10.8 percentage points to 59.9%, whilst fossil fuel share of electricity generation stood at 39.4%.* (table ET 5.4)

*Major Power Producers (MPPs) data published monthly, all generating companies data published quarterly.

Energy prices

Highlights for August 2020 compared to July 2020:

  • Petrol prices up 1.9 pence per litre on month, whilst diesel prices up 1.4 pence per litre, as the price of crude oil recovers. (table QEP 4.1.1)
