Find further breakdowns of these statistics in Stat-Xplore, an online tool for exploring some of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) main statistics. You can use Stat-Xplore to create your own customised tables and charts.
This publication provides statistics on:
- the outcomes of completed Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) Work Capability Assessments (WCA)
- claims still in progress
- claims closed before the WCA process is complete
- outcomes of completed appeals for ESA WCA
This release also includes:
- ESA WCA mandatory reconsideration registrations and outcomes to July 2018
- statistics on ESA WCA mandatory reconsideration clearance times to July 2018
- more detailed ‘experimental’ cohort information
- ESA clearance times, including regional breakdowns, to March 2018
- completed appeals outcomes for initial WCA’s to June 2017
The publication covers both new and repeat ESA claims and information on claims undergoing reassessment of incapacity benefits for ESA in Great Britain.
Statistics on appeal WCA outcomes are available on Stat-Xplore (DWP’s online tabulation tool) for the first time. This covers appeal WCA outcomes as well as new lower-level geography breakdowns – region, local authority and Westminster parliamentary constituency.
New tables showing changes to WCA – in September 2017 DWP introduced changes to the WCA. This means some claimants in the support group will no longer need to be reassessed. We have included data on these claimants for the first time in our published tables.
Medical condition and ICD codes
DWP have improved the methodology for the publication of statistics on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes. This is sometimes referred to in DWP statistics as medical condition codes.
This information was previously removed from the ESA WCA National Statistics due to the discovery of a discrepancy with the methodology. Some administrative codes were no longer being used or were assigned to other conditions. Approximately 18% of the DWP medical codes were incorrectly mapped to the wrong statistical medical condition groups. Read the note about this on the ESA WCA collection page for more information.
