Investigating household expenditure in island communities

Regional accounts have been developing estimates of regional household final consumption expenditure (HFCE). The living costs and food survey (LCF) is one of the data sources being used in the regional allocation of household expenditure. There is, however, an issue of undercoverage in certain geographic areas covered by the LCF, for example island communities. This article reports on research that was undertaken to investigate whether there are differences in household expenditure in island communities compared to mainland. This qualitative research project is the first step to help us produce more accurate estimates for areas where survey coverage is limited.
