Statistics on light rail and tram systems in England.

The statistics are collected annually to inform the development and monitoring of light rail policy. Figures present information on usage, infrastructure and revenue for the 8 systems which are urban and primarily surface-running.

Light rail and tram use in England has seen the biggest decrease in almost 30 years.

In the financial year ending March 2020:

  • 263.4 million passenger journeys were made, a 4.2% decrease from the year ending March 2019
  • a 4.0% decrease in passenger journeys in England (outside London)
  • a 4.3% decrease in London

When comparing to the financial year ending March 2019:

  • vehicle mileage decreased by 0.9% to 22.3 million miles
  • light rail revenue decreased by 1.1% (a decrease in real terms of 3.0%)

The coronavirus pandemic has had an impact on every aspect of life in the United Kingdom, which has affected almost all statistical trends across the transport sector. The period covered by this release includes time after movement restrictions due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) were announced in March. The collection of this data is not granular enough to distinguish numbers of passenger journeys before and after the restrictions were announced.
