Revision

This statistical release has been revised to correct a processing error affecting Statistics in Development in Chart 8 and some of the associated commentary. 2024 FTE workforce figures were double-counted in system-level analysis only. The associated data table was unaffected.

The statistics are collected annually to inform the development and monitoring of light rail policy. Figures present information on usage, service provision, infrastructure and revenue for the 8 systems which are urban and primarily surface-running.

This publication includes accredited official statistics and official statistics in development. For more information, see the quality report.

In the financial year ending March 2024, compared with the financial year ending March 2023:

  • light rail and tram use in England increased by 8%, to 228.8 million passenger journeys

  • there was an increase of 12% in passenger journeys in England outside London and an increase of 5% in London

  • vehicle mileage in England increased by 4%, to 21.6 million miles

  • light rail revenue in England increased by 12%, to £365.8 million
