NIESR undertook an analysis, comparing the characteristics of mid-sized businesses (MSB) in the UK with those in a selected number of European countries.
The selection of countries was informed by a desire to capture some of those that have performed comparatively well during and before the current economic crisis. Further countries may be added at a later stage.
MSBs for European countries are defined as those with a turnover of between €25m and €500m or, in the case of UK businesses, £25m and £500m (about €29m to €575m at March 2010 exchange rates). The statistics presented here have been estimated using employment and turnover statistics obtained from Statistics Finland, Statistics Sweden, the Federal Statistics Office of Germany, and the UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).
