Changes to the NCMP: trends in child BMI deprivation allocation method
Updated 21 April 2021
Applies to England
New method
For the 2021 publication of the updated trends in child body mass index (BMI) report, the allocation of a data record to a deprivation quintile or deprivation decile uses the version of the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) which most closely aligns with the time period of data. The table below shows the IMD version that has been assigned to each National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) year from 2013 to 2014 up to 2019 to 2020 in this new report and previous versions.
Table 1: NCMP year by version of IMD applied

Reason for change
The change has been made to align with the analytical approach for assigning IMD applied within Public Health England (PHE).
