The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is the main scheme for monitoring population changes of common breeding birds in the UK. Ordinarily, species trends are produced annually for the countries of the UK, with data used to inform conservation priorities, action, and reporting. However, the 2021 statistic contains trends for a reduced set of species, in England only. This is because of the impact of country-specific differences in Covid restrictions on 2020 field data collection, which mean reliable trends cannot be produced for species in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, or the UK. Rationale and guidance on interpretation accompanies the trends. The BBS is a Partnership jointly funded by BTO, RSPB and JNCC, and is indebted to the thousands of volunteer data recorders who take part.
