Alongside this quarterly publication we have published the response to a user feedback exercise on changes to the quarterly and annual port freight table structure. Please see the document on this page which sets out the feedback received. There was a consensus of support for the proposed changes, which are planned for the annual release scheduled for publication August 2018.

Provisional quarterly statistics on freight handled at major UK sea ports.

When comparing January to March 2018 with January to March 2017:

  • total freight tonnage through UK major ports decreased by 4% to 112.0 million tonnes
  • total volume of unitised traffic through UK major ports decreased 3% to 5.2 million units

When comparing the rolling year to March 2018 with March 2017:

  • total tonnage through UK major ports decreased 1% to 465.7 million tonnes
  • total volume of unitised traffic decreased 1% to 23.9 million units

Detailed final annual statistics for 2018 will be published in summer 2018.
