Details

Up until 2016 to 2017 the Prison Rating System assessed both public sector and privately-managed prisons by looking at performance data in 31 indicators from prisons’ individual SLAs or contracts. These were supplemented by independent, qualitative assessments from inspections and audits. The overall performance of each prison establishment was graded into one of the following four bands:

Level 4: Exceptional performance Level 3: Meeting the majority of targets Level 2: Overall performance is of concern Level 1: Overall performance is of serious concern

Coldingley, High Down, Holme House, Kirklevington Grange, Ranby and Wandsworth were afforded additional freedoms from July 2016 as part of the pilot for the reform of public sector prisons. Because of this the ratings presented for those 6 prisons are not directly comparable to the other ratings for the majority of the prison estate
