Provisional estimates of road traffic, by

  • vehicle type
  • road class

in Great Britain for the year ending June 2017.

Provisional estimates show that motor vehicle traffic was at a record high of 325.1 billion vehicle miles. This is 1.4% higher than the previous year.

When comparing with the year ending June 2016, we see that:

  • car traffic increased by 1.3% to a record 253.5 billion vehicle miles
  • van traffic rose 3.6% to a new peak of 49.8 billion vehicle miles
  • HGV traffic fell by 1.5% to 16.5 billion vehicle miles
  • traffic increased on all road types except for urban ‘A’ roads, where it stayed broadly stable
