Provisional estimates of road traffic, by

in Great Britain for the year ending September 2022.
Provisional estimates show motor vehicles travelled 321.9 billion vehicle miles in Great Britain for the year ending September 2022. This is a 12.6% increase compared to the year ending September 2021.
When compared to the year ending September 2021:
- car traffic increased by 13.5% to 239.8 billion vehicle miles
- van traffic increased by 12.2% to 59.5 billion vehicle miles
- lorry traffic increased by 2.8% to 17.9 billion vehicle miles
- traffic on motorways increased by 16.9% to 66.5 billion vehicle miles
- traffic on ‘A’ roads increased by 12.4% to 140.1 billion vehicle miles
- traffic on minor roads increased by 10.5% to 115.3 billion vehicle miles
Changes to the TRA25 data series
All tables in the TRA25 series (Provisional road traffic estimates, Great Britain) have been converted to a more accessible format. More information regarding the accessibility of spreadsheets published by the department can be found on the standards for official statistics page.
The tables in this series have been restructured to improve visibility and reduce duplication:
- the rolling annual and quarterly road traffic estimates by vehicle type and road class can still be found in tables TRA2501 to TRA2506
- the rolling annual road traffic estimates indexed to 1994 have been moved to table TRA2511
- the percentage change in the rolling annual road traffic estimates have been moved to table TRA2512
