This will include breakdowns by:

  • age groups
  • ethnicities
  • genders
  • sentence lengths and offence types
  • the length of elapsed time in prison prior to self-inflicted death
  • the method and location of self-inflicted deaths
  • the proportion of those who took their own lives who were classed as at risk at the time of their death

The publication uses data from the National Offender Management Service (NOMS) safety in custody dataset. The information was in part produced to inform the independent review into self-Inflicted deaths in NOMS custody of 18 to 24 year olds.
