National and official statistics
The Statistics and Registration Services Act (SRSA) 2007 defines Official Statistics as all statistical outputs from the Office for National Statistics, central government departments and agencies, by devolved administrations in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales and other Crown Bodies. Under some circumstances, non-Crown bodies can be considered to produce Official Statistics output.
All statistics produced by the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills are Official Statistics.
As a requirement of the SRSA2007, the Code of Practice for Official Statistics was published in January 2009.
A National Statistic is an Official Statistic which has been formally assessed by the UK Statistics Authority as compliant with the Code of Practice.
The REPI compendium publication has been assessed and designated as a National Statistic, subject to certain requirements which we are currently addressing. The Assessment Report (number 169) can be found on the UK Statistics Authority website.
This National Statistics status refers only to the compilation of REPI and not the statistics that are included. It is the responsibility of the producer body and the UK Statistics Authority to determine whether the statistics are designated as National Statistics, and those that are have been independently assessed by the UK Statistics Authority.
As a result, some tables included in REPI are National Statistics and others are not. To see which tables are designated as National Statistics, please see the following table:
