Details

This factsheet presents the latest available statistics for fatal collisions which involve one of the ‘fatal 4’ contributory factors - speed, affected by alcohol or drugs, seatblet non-wearing or mobile device use. These are areas prioritised by police to reduce the number of people killed in road collisions.

As well as an overall factsheet comparing characteristics of collisions involving at least one of the fatal 4 factors with other fatal collisions, there is a separate factsheet covering the speed factors, drink and drugs and seatbelt non-wearing.

Each factsheet considers:

  • collision circumstances
  • vehicles and drivers involved
  • resulting fatalities

Data is largely based on contributory factors reported by police, but has been presented using the new road safety factors framework which has been introduced as part of the new specification for collection of STATS19 data from 2024 onwards.

The road safety statistics team welcomes any feedback on these factsheets, including suggestions for further analysis.
