Reported road casualties for the year ending June 2023, showed signs of a continued return to pre-pandemic trends, whilst still being higher than in the years 2020 and 2021 where casualty numbers were low, largely as a result of periods of lockdown leading to a reduction in road traffic.
In reported road collisions in Great Britain in the year ending June 2023, there were an estimated:

1,633 fatalities, a decline of 9% compared to the year ending June 2022

29,429 killed or seriously injured (KSI) casualties, a decline of 1% compared to the year ending June 2022

133,443 casualties of all severities, a decline of 3% compared to the year ending June 2022

5 fatalities per billion vehicle miles travelled, a decline of 11% compared to the year ending June 2022
Alongside this publication we have updated our factsheet on e-scooter casualties with figures for the year ending June 2023 based on casualties reported to the police.
We have also released a new methodology note on contributory factors, based on final 2021 data, to explore how the reporting of factors differs when based on information available a longer time after the collision occurs than is typically captured.
The next reported road casualty statistics, provisional annual estimates for the whole of 2023, are scheduled for publication in May 2024.
